We celebrated our honeymoon on the Navigator of the Seas, a ship that we had sailed out of Southampton on two years earlier and the ship that my husband proposed to me on. The journey to the ship was excellent and we made it through check-in very easily. We found our room, our first ever balcony and were pleasantly greeted with honeymoon decorations and a complimentary honeymoon package, including strawberries dipped in chocolate and champagne on arrival. The service was great from the room attendant, waitress and assistant waiter from the restaurant. We found that the second seating time of 9.15 was too late for our taste (we were expecting 8.30) and as a consequence we missed lots of the performances on the ship which we would have usually attended. We did have a stunning meal in Chops Grille - the service and food were both faultless. The only real issue that I could find was the inconsistency in approach to different nationalities on board the ship. Equality issues definitely need to be considered, particularly in the main restaurant. Although this did not ruin our honeymoon, it has certainly made us consider which port we should depart from in future and whether RCI should be the company of choice when we are paying out a great deal of money. The Windjammer was like feeding frenzy at the zoo on a number of occasions, making it very difficult to get to the food or finda seat. Our restaurant table was missed out by the photographer on the second formal night as we were tucked away in the corner. There was evidence of graffiti in some of the toilets and on the tables in cafe promenade. No chocolates on the pillow anymore either! That said, ports of call (Barcelona was a particularly fantastic day out!), trips and the majority of the experience was spectacular and made our honeymoon a week to remember. The Navigator of the Seas was built at Kvaerner Masa yards in Finland for Royal Caribbean Cruises. The ship is 311.1m (1,020ft) in length and has a breadth of 38.6m (126ft) at waterline level (or 49.1m / 161ft at the bridge wings) Its height is 72.3m (237ft) from keel to the top of the funnel. With a gross tonnage of approximately 140,000t the Navigator of the Seas has a passenger capacity of 3,807 passengers accommodated in 1,557 staterooms, almost 50% of which have balconies. The crew capacity is 1,213 and the number of crew cabins is 690. On Decks 2, 3 and 4, the Metropolis theatre seats 1,359. Deck 2 has a multimedia screening room / cinema seating 60 persons and a large conference centre for up to 400 guests. In front is the Schooner piano bar and, opposite that, the Dungeon nightclub. On Deck 5 is the four-deck high, 120m-long Royal Promenade with an 11-deck high atrium at each end. The Royal Promenade affords inside staterooms a view. Almost 10% of Navigator's staterooms have bay windows overlooking the Royal Promenade. The staterooms are on Decks 6 to 9. On Deck 6 there is the Business Service Centre, complete with PCs with internet connections. On Deck 7 is the library, with a panoramic view overlooking the Royal Promenade. On Deck 8 is the Royal Caribbean Online internet lounge with 19 PCs. On Deck 9 is the Concierge Lounge while Deck 10 contains the largest guest staterooms, the wheelhouse and some of the officers' cabins. In the main midship pool area on Deck 11 there are two main swimming pools, four jacuzzis and one cooling pool. Deck 12 contains the Adventure Ocean facilities for children and teens and in the forward part of the divided deck 13, above the ShipShape Centre, is the St. Tropez sunbathing area. Aft is a nine-hole miniature golf, driving range and golf simulators, a roller blade track, a basketball / paddleball / volleyball court and a sports equipment outlet. Well, it’s the end of November in Cleveland, and that is my cue to head for warmer climes. Besides, I was beginning to suffer wanderlust and needed a cruise jolt. Although I have been to the Caribbean on numerous occasions, I had not yet sailed on the Navigator of the Seas and the timing was perfect. So, I was looking forward to joining other travel professionals on a seminar-at-sea. Since the weather is always unpredictable this time of year in this area of the country, I made arrangements to fly to Florida a day before the cruise (something I always advise, if at all possible). As it turned out, that was a very wise decision. Now, there was a winter storm that brought a significant amount of snow to our area on Thanksgiving Day, but my flight from Cleveland the next day actually left on time. However, I had to change planes in Nashville and that is where my problems began. There was a substantial delay to my flight leaving Nashville. Had I chosen to fly in the day of the cruise, in all likelihood, I would have missed the cruise. As it was much cheaper to fly to Fort Lauderdale and take a shuttle to Miami the day of the cruise, I made reservations at a hotel near the airport for one night. Embarkation: I took a taxi from my hotel in Fort Lauderdale to pier and Miami ($80 including tip) and arrived at the port about 10:30 AM. There was a sign that indicated embarkation was scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM, but that was not actually the case. When we arrived, a fairly long line was already beginning to form at the security checkpoint. In fact, thanks to the priority boarding Diamond Members in the Crown and Anchor Society are provided, my friends and I were on the ship before 11:30 AM. This is just one of the reasons that it is quite worthwhile to cruise on Royal Caribbean often. MS Navigator of the Seas is fourth out of Royal Caribbean International's five Voyager-class cruise ships. She was once one of the largest in the fleet and still ranks among the largest passenger ships in the world. Constructed at Aker Finnyards in Turku, Finland, the ship measures 138,279 gross tons and can carry 3,114 passengers, plus crew. Her length is 1,020 feet and with a beam of 157.5 feet. As of April 2007, she began departing exclusively from Southampton, UK, on cruises throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. Currently, the Navigator spends winters sailing four and five night cruises from Florida, and spends the summers sailing from Civitavecchia, Italy to the Eastern Mediterranean. Of further note is that Navigator is the first of the second generation of Voyager-class vessels. She is noted different from her sisters by the set up of the rear buffet (Windjammer) which extends further aft, and also includes "Jade", an Asian fusion buffet. She is also more obviously different in that she has glass balconies which all the 1st generation sisters lack. The ship was 'open for business' immediately, with food available in the Windjammer restaurant and coffee in the coffee shop... along with some sugar free cookies for diabetic me. I loved the ship especially the fantastic amount of modern art and architectural features, and the cabins were comfortable. We found the access to our account via the TV useful. We ate in the Windjammer at lunch time, and got into the habit of eating early and missing breakfast (although we did have breakfast from room service a couple of times and the food and service were good). This meant plenty of space, as it obviously got a lot busier later. Another good alternative at lunch time (or evening) was Johnny Rockets, the burger place. These were really tasty quality burgers and the individual juke boxes and staff ' performances' made for a lively meal. There was a $4 cover charge in here. The main restaurant meals were also surprisingly good and not cold as mentioned in other reports. Our service from Wilson and Gemma was top and yet again my sugar free items were a real treat. We took advantage of the other speciality restaurants too at a charge of $20 per head. The food in Portofino and Chops grill was fab, the service amazing and the extras easily worth the extra tenner. We went twice to both. Our cruise before this was on P&O's Arcadia, which was lovely, but we decided that this food beat that considering it was a cheaper cruise. Navigator of the Seas (Wallpaper 1).
