INS Tarangini is a tall ship of the Indian Navy, commissioned in 1997 as a sail training ship for naval cadets. Tarangini is a three-masted barque, square rigged on the fore and main masts and fore-and-aft rigged on the mizzen mast. She was constructed in Goa to a design by the British naval architect Colin Mudie, and launched on 1 December 1995. INS Tarangini', the Indian Navy's only sail training ship, today set sail for 'Lokayan 07', a ten-month long overseas voyage, to take part in the 'Tall Ships Challenge Series-2007' held by American Sail Training Association (ASTA) on the Atlantic Coast of North America. The crew headed by Commander Sunil Balakrishnan, consists of seven officers, 43 sailors and 39 cadets, including eight from the Coast Guard. They will transit through the Suez Canal to reach the Atlantic Coast of North America in early May this year and take part in a series of Tall Ships races including 'The World Peace Cup', 'Sail Virginia', 'Sail Rhode Island', 'Sail Boston' and the 50th anniversary celebrations of the International programme of the Naval War College at New Port, Rhode Island. During the voyage, 255 Indian naval cadets and 40 foreign cadets will also join the crew in groups at various ports. The ships would be calling at 23 ports in 16 countries covering about 20,000 nautical miles. Today's function was attended by Vice Admiral J S Bedi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, who interacted with the cadets, crew and the families of the training squadron before the ship set sail for 'Lokayan 07'. Of the 27 Naval forces in the world which operate sail training ships, 15 are in Europe, five in Latin America and three in Asia. INS Tarangini is the first commissioned ship in Indian Navy to have circumnavigated the globe, from Jan 23, 2003 to April 25, 2004 with the theme 'building bridges of friendship across the oceans'. INS Tarangini is the first sail training ship of the Indian Navy. Her name has been derived from the Hindi word tarang which means ‘waves’. Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), she was commissioned in the Indian Navy on November 11, 1997. The ship's complement includes 6 officers, 27 crew and 30 trainees. She provides an ideal setting for the first-hand experience to the cadets embarking on a Naval career. The training onboard aims not only to expose young officers and sailors to the use of sails and various types of operations of the ships of bygone era but also to inclucate in each trainee, esprit de corps, physical and mental agility and leadership qualities.
