Bush (CVN-77), the 10th and final nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the Nimitz class is scheduled to be commissioned on January 10 during a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk, Va. The aircraft carrier is named in honor of the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush. It is further interesting to note that the commissioning is to take place without completing sea trials, before President George W. Bush (the eldest son of the former President George H.W.Bush) demits office on January 20. The $6.3b ship built by Northrop Grumman was originally scheduled for completion in April 2008. The completion was delayed due to labor shortages, late material deliveries. After commissioning, USS George H.W. Bush will be initially home ported in Norfolk, Va., and assigned to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet to prepare for builder’s and acceptance trials. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) Wallpaper 4. USS George H.W. Bush incorporates major improvements from her predecessors, including a bulbous bow, redesigned island, composite mast and three-wire arresting gear configuration. The first Commanding Officer of USS George H.W. Bush is Capt. Kevin O’Flaherty. The carrier will have a crew of more than 5,500 men and women, including embarked air wing personnel. The ship will support the F/A-18C Hornet and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters, the E-2C/D Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning aircraft, the C-2 Greyhound logistics aircraft, the EA-6B Prowler and the EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, multi-role SH-60 and MH-60 helicopters, and other future carrier-based aircrafts. As a 21-cannon salute boomed and U.S. Navy fighter jets thundered overhead, President George W. Bush declared a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named for his father, former President George H. W. Bush, will sail the globe as a potent symbol of men and women in uniform, past and present. Read more from U.S.Navy. Bush (CVN 77) anchored off the coast of Portsmouth, England, May 26, marking the first ever overseas port call for the nation's newest Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Nearly 5,000 Sailors of George H.W. Bush and embarked Carrier Air Wing Eight will spend several days visiting the historic port and the capital city of London, as well as participating in the various tours offered to the crew through the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program. "Portsmouth is the first of many port visits for this proud ship," said George H.W. Bush Command Master Chief (SW) David Colton. "The crew is excited to get immersed in English culture, try the local food, and go to London." Colton said the expectations are high for the crew as they show the Navy's newest aircraft carrier to a foreign nation, and he remained confident in their ability to represent their country and their ship. Bush Sailor will be great ambassadors and their conduct ashore will be exceptional," he said. The scheduled port call follows George H.W. Bush's participation in the eight-day, multi-national military exercise Saxon Warrior 11, which was hosted by the U.K.-based Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST). The guided missile destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG 103), assigned to the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group, also arrived in Portsmouth for its first foreign port call. Both ships departed Norfolk, Va., May 11 on their first combat deployment. The ceremonial keel-laying of the Navy’s newest Nimitz-class carrier, Pre-Commissioning Unit George H. W. Bush (PCU 77), was held Sept. 6, 2003 at Northrup Grumman Newport News shipyard. On-hand to authenticate the keel was former president and namesake George H. W. Bush. The ceremony served to authenticate the keel by welding a steel plate burnished with George H. W. Bush’s initials to the keel. After witnessing the burnishing, Bush announced, “The keel has been truly and fairly laid.” USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) Wallpaper 3. USS George H.W. Bush was commissioned Saturday 10 January 2009 at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. Attending the ceremony was the former president and former first lady Barbara Bush, and their son, U.S. President George W. Bush, who launched the Nimitz class nuclear-powered carrier Saturday by saying, "I hereby place the United States Ship George H.W. Bush in commission. May God bless and guide this warship and all who shall sail in her." Calling his father an "awesome man," Bush said, "So what do you give a guy who has been blessed and has just about everything he has ever needed? Well, an aircraft carrier!" The elder Bush is a decorated Navy pilot from World War II who flew torpedo bombers off the converted aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) Wallpaper 2. USS George H.W. "Being here in this ceremony takes me back 65 years to another commissioning, this one on the shipyards of Philadelphia, for the USS San Jacinto, a light carrier upon which my crewmates, very few of whom are with us today, and I were preparing to serve in World War II," the former president said. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates also declared USS George H.W. Bush a fitting tribute to the man who served his country for more than 40 years in several capacities. “There is no one more worthy of having the last Nimitz-class aircraft carrier named in his honor than our 41st president, the last of the World War II generation to serve as commander-in-chief,” Gates said. “As commander-in-chief, President [George H.W.] Bush had a courage and toughness that impressed all those who worked for him. “At the same time, he was, and is, a man of feeling, especially where men and women in uniform are concerned,” the secretary added. President George W. Bush delivered the principal address at the christening ceremony of the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, named for his father, former President George H. W. Bush, at 10 am EDT 07 October 2006 at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, VA. Capt. Kevin O'Flaherty, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., and a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is the prospective commanding officer. In that capacity, he will be responsible for more than 5,000 crew members, to include the embarked air wing, when the ship is commissioned and fully operational. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) aircraft carrier photos and pictures wallpaper collection 1. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy. She is named for the 41st President of the United States George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. Bush's callsign is Avenger, after the TBM Avenger aircraft flown by then-Lieutenant George Bush in WWII. Construction began in 2001 at the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard and was completed in 2009 at a cost of $6.2 billion. She is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. Each element of the seal is significant for its relevance to the ship’s namesake, naval aviation, naval service, and the nation. There are six prominent features of the seal, beginning with the 41 white stars, symbolizing the ship’s namesake (the 41st President). USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) Wallpaper 1. USS George H.W. The rays of light that appear on the seal’s horizon represent Bush’s concept of a "thousand points of light", wherein he urged Americans to find meaning and reward by serving a purpose higher than themselves. The graphic depiction of the aircraft carrier reflects the carrier as both a symbol and instrument of American strength as “a force for good.” Above the carrier are overhead profiles of a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber (representing Bush’s days as a Navy pilot), an F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter, and an F-35 Lightning II. Fouled anchors and shields, centered on naval aviators wings, honor the ship’s namesake’s aviation history. Finally, the motto “Freedom at Work” is adapted from Bush’s inaugural speech, during which he said, “We know what works: Freedom works. We know what’s right: Freedom is right. Bush stretches 1,092 feet and displaces over 100,000 tons, making her one of the world’s largest warships (though she is slightly shorter than USS Enterprise). Her top speed exceeds 30 knots and powered with two nuclear reactors, she can operate for more than 20 years without refueling. Several features differentiate CVN-77 from other ships in the Nimitz class. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) Wallpaper 1. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) aircraft carrier images wallpaper gallery 1.
