Invincible initially lacked any close-in weapon systems. As one of the lessons from the Falklands War Invincible had two 20 mm Raytheon Phalanx close-in weapon systems fitted but these were later upgraded to three Thales 30 mm Goalkeeper CIWS; there are also two Oerlikon 20 mm cannons. Countermeasures were provided by a Thales jamming system and ECM system, Seagnat launchers provide for chaff or flare decoys. Initially the carriers were armed with a Sea Dart SAM missile system, but this was removed to enlarge the flight deck and to allow magazine storage for Royal Air Force Harrier GR7s. The carrier's air group comprised nine Harriers and twelve helicopters (usually all Sea Kings, either anti-submarine warfare (ASW) or Airborne Early Warning (AEW) variants). The carrier also provided an operational headquarters for the Royal Navy task force. The runway is 170 metres (560 ft) long and included the characteristic "ski jump" (initially at 7°, later increased to 12°).We will accordingly: in the transitional period, retain a reduced Tornado fleet, but remove Harrier from service in 2011 as the fast jet force moves to two operational types – Joint Strike Fighter and Typhoon. During the journey south from Ascension Island to the Falklands, on 23 April, Invincible locked her Sea Dart system onto a Brazilian Airlines DC10 in mistake for the Argentine Air Force Boeing 707 that had been monitoring the fleet's movements for several days. Task group commander, Rear Admiral "Sandy" Woodward had the previous day sought permission from Commander-in-Chief Admiral Sir John Fieldhouse to shoot down the 707, which had been nicknamed the "burglar," as he believed it could precede a raid launched from the Argentine aircraft carrier ARA Veinticinco de Mayo against his own carriers. Woodward believed he had been given permission to shoot it down as long as it came within a certain distance, and could be positively identified, although he held this belief as a result of a conversation via the Defence Secure Speech System, and had not had this confirmed in writing. As the 707 was no direct threat to the fleet, Woodward ordered its course tracked, and it was reported to him that the plane was on a "direct line running from Durban to Rio de Janeiro". The Harrier pilot reported that "it was a Brazilian Airliner, with all the normal navigation and running lights on." Details of the Harrier interception appeared in the Brazilian press, with passengers "alleged to have been frightened," with Woodward's reply to Fieldhouse's request for details of the incident being "Inconvenience to passengers' underwear regretted unless any of them were Argentinian." The carriers were originally designed as "through-deck cruisers", without the now characteristic ski ramp, with the Sea Harrier FRS Mk1 in mind. During operational tests, however, it was discovered that using the ski ramp provided the Sea Harrier with far better performance, allowing it to carry more fuel and weapons, making it a far more versatile aircraft for fleet defense. The upgrade of the FRS Mk1, the Sea Harrier FRS Mk 2 has been a greatly successful fighter, and will continue to do its job for a few more years. The third of class, HMS Indomitable, was later renamed HMS Ark Royal so as to continue the tradition of having an aircraft carrier in service named Ark Royal. The original Ark Royal was a British galleon of 800 tons built for Sir Walter Raleigh in 1587. She was the flagship of Lord Howard at the battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588. On 25 February 1982 the Australian government announced after several months of negotiations that it had agreed to buy Invincible and a number of Sea King and Wessex helicopters as embarked airpower for £175 million. The sale was confirmed by the Ministry of Defence. The ship would have replaced the Royal Australian Navy's HMAS Melbourne and would have been renamed HMAS Australia. On 2 April 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and three days later a naval task force headed by Invincible and Hermes left Portsmouth bound for the South Atlantic. On 20 April 1982 the British War Cabinet ordered the repossession of the Falkland Islands. In the commemorative booklet for the launch by the Queen on May 3, 1977, the yard said: “Vickers are proud that one more prototype – ‘the difficult ships to build’ – takes to the water from their Barrow shipyard, giving to the Royal Navy a ship which is in every way designed and equipped for naval operations in the 1980s, a ship that is not only another first of class, but the best which British technology can give the Senior Service.” HMS Invincible R05 (wallpaper 2). The brochure also said: “When commissioned and in service, Invincible will have the ability to exercise command and tactical coordination of ships, aircraft and submarines in operational Task Group at Sea.” Little did anyone know that within two years of delivery to the Royal Navy in 1980, Invincible would, with another Barrow carrier, HMS Hermes, be playing a risky but crucial role in the Falklands War. During the 1982 Falklands conflict, the task force had accomplished two of its main tasks by mid-May: the movement of the troops safely to the South Atlantic and the establishment of control of the seas around the Islands. The role of the carriers, HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible, was crucial at this and subsequent stages in providing air defence and the means of attacking enemy ships and ground positions, while their helicopters provided constant anti-submarine protection. HMS Invincible (R05) was a British light aircraft carrier, the lead ship of three in her class in the Royal Navy. She was launched on 3 May 1977 and is the seventh ship to carry the name. She saw action in the Falklands war when she was deployed with HMS Hermes, she took over as Flagship of the British Fleet when Hermes was sold to India. HMS Invincible was also deployed in Yugoslavia and Iraq. She was decommissioned in 2005. In February 2011 she was sold to Turkish Leyal Ship Recycling. Invincible was built at Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering. She was laid down in 1973 and launched on 3 May 1977. On 11 July 1980 she was commissioned and joined the fleet's other carriers HMS Hermes and HMS Bulwark in service. The HMS Invincible class of aircraft carriers were designed to replace the early post-war aircraft carriers that were HMS Ark Royal and HMS Hermes. As the carriers were coming into service during the early eighties (HMS Invincible, the first of class, saw action in the Falklands) there were worries about whether Britain would be able to continue its role as a balanced Navy, rather than the ASW wing of NATO. The Invincible design was described as a through deck cruiser in a bid to disguise the fact from the government that it was actually an aircraft carrier, as the Labour government was withdrawing the nation’s last big conventional carriers. The through deck cruisers were designed for that great British invention, the vertical take-off Harrier jump jets. The main machinery of the new HMS Invincible was different to conventional carriers. She had no main boilers or steam turbines but was driven by Rolls-Royce Olympus gas turbines, which were a variant of those used by beautiful Concorde supersonic airliners. The completion of Invincible involved installing one million components served by 1,000 kilometres of cables and 100 kilometres of pipes. The number of people working on the build in Barrow peaked at 3,500 during the fitting out in Buccleuch Dock, but a total of 35,000 people were involved in sub contractor roles around the country. During its build, the shipyard workforce was around 14,000 compared with 5,000 today. Invincible was the largest warship to be built for the Royal Navy since the 1950s. But it was later superseded by the slightly larger HMS Ocean, a VSEL ship but one which had its hull built at Govan, and was fitted out, named and commissioned in Barrow where, like Invincible, it became a landmark.
