The 289 foot (88m) Maltese Falcon luxury yacht is the worlds largest private sailboat. This spectacular mega yacht just recently changed owners, and it is reported that the luxury yacht finally sold to Elena Ambrosiadou for only the mere sum of 120 million US dollars. A real deal if you consider original owner, Tom Perkins was asking $165 million. Ambrosiadou, grew up in Greece and is best known for establishing one of the most successful hedge funds in the world, and was Britain's top paid female executive before moving her company Ikos to Cyprus in 2006. Currently she appears to be shying away from all the publicity, but will now be recognizes not only as one the world's top female entrepreneurs, but as the new owner of the world's most impressive luxury yacht. Matter a fact, she's the only woman we could find who owns a luxury mega yacht, anywhere! This luxury yacht boasts and array of fascinating features beginning with the rig, which is impressive and complicated to say the least. It is also efficient, reaching almost 20 knots under sail alone. The Maltese Falcon sports a DynaRig, which means it is effectively a square rigger, with each of the three freestanding masts supporting six yardarms, which are joined rigidly to the mast. The luxury yacht's 25,791 square feet (2,400 square meters) of sails are positioned between the yards in a way that when deployed there are no gaps to the sail plan, allowing each spar's sails to work as a single airfoil. Unlike your conventional square rigger, the yards have a built in camber of 12%, and the sails are trimmed to the wind direction by rotating the entire mast, that is operated by a sail control system on the yacht bridge. When its not deployed, the luxury mega yacht's sails furl right into the mast itself. The luxury Maltese Falcon's interior is as magnificent as you'd expect, with the main feature being the atrium. The three decks are joined by a circular stairway, surrounding the main mast creating a spiralling effect. This is enhanced by natural light streaming in from the top of the yacht to the lower decks through transparent floors. The main deck of the Maltese Falcon luxury yacht is a wide open space with a main saloon, a huge aft-cockpit, two studio areas and a stunning dining room. For sleeping accommodations there are five lower deck staterooms and one passage cabin on the top deck with a private sun bathing area, and direct access to the mega yacht wheelhouse. The Maltese Falcon luxury yacht carries two 32 foot Pascoe RIB Tenders, four Laser sailboats, and a 14 foot Castold Jet tender. In addition, the Maltese Falcon yacht also has a private submarine for exploring the deep, which was one of former luxury yacht owners, Tom Perkins' favorite toys, and strangely enough was one of the reasons Perkins says he sold the luxury Maltese Falcon. "My excitement is derived from the technical and aesthetic challenges of new yacht projects rather than from just cruising aboard the finished yacht. I would now like to focus my interest in ‘sports' submarines and possibly build a specialized yacht to use as a sub carrier." The new luxury yacht owner seems to have very little to comment of her recent mega yacht purchase and appears she'd rather not attract too much attention to herself, which is a bit difficult to do when you own the world's biggest luxury sailing yacht. I suppose sustaining a low profile means many different things to different people.
