The solar waves are running fast and its velocity can be measured by the fact that much-talked about world’s largest solar boat has finally felt water. The boat that left Monaco in late September 2010 is expected to disembark in Miami on 29 November 2010. Weighing 60 tones, the 102-foot yacht has a 50-foot beam and its top layer comes layered with 5,300 sq ft of solar panels and it is claimed to hit a top speed of around 15 knots. It is been conveyed that 5 men along with a woman are steering this catamaran around the world. The initiative is to hoist consciousness of the carbon footprint formed by boats used to ship merchandise. The mastermind behind Turanor Planet Solar, a blissful creation is that of Craig Loomes of LOMOcean Design as it uses less energy than riding atop them. If you are curious to know the key faces behind this master creation then here are 2 big men i.e. Raphaël Domjan, a Swiss engineer and founder of the PlanetSolar project and German industrialist Immo Ströher, a promoter of renewable forms of energy, invited by Domjan to join services with him as a part of this project. Ströher has invested $17.5 million into the expansion of Turanor PlanetSolar project, which is proving to be a great success. Turanor PlanetSolar (wallpaper 4). Ask Ströher about his ambitions attached with this project and he declares: “We wish for a quality expansion of sustainable energy technologies on the water and in other mobile applications.” The idea is to proffer future-proof resolutions for sustainable living in major cities and environment-friendly mobility concepts. It is been gathered that post Miami, the yacht will lead to Cancun, Mexico, the site of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Considering its 85 tonnes and its potential to shape the future of maritime travel, the launch of Türanor was a surprisingly reserved affair. The world's largest solar-powered boat made a gentle plop as it was lowered by a huge crane on to the waters of the Kiel firth in northern Germany today, and triggered the polite applause of onlookers – mainly fishermen and shipyard workers. "We've made it, she's safe, and she floats," whispered its owner, Immo Ströher, with tears welling in his eyes. But the real challenges for the gleaming white catamaran still lie ahead, as its makers seek to use it to prove that the sun can fuel our world. Next year, after an intense testing phase, Türanor – the name, inspired by JRR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings, means "power of the sun" – will embark on her maiden voyage, a round-the-world trip during which her two-man crew will attempt to chase the sun in order to capture as much available solar power as possible and navigate her at an average speed of 7.5 knots. Ströher's granddaughter christened her today by smashing a bottle of champagne against her teak deck, and pronouncing: "May you always have plenty of water under your bows, and sun on your deck."
