The Turanor PlanetSolar is close to its mission to circumnavigate the world. So what, you say. It has all been done many times before. The big deal is that the Turanor PlanetSolar, is the first totally solar powered boat to accomplish this feat. The Turanor PlanetSolar, brain child of its founder, Raphael Domjan is a 100 x 50 foot catamaran powered by 5,300 square feet of photovoltaic cells on 825 solar panels. The panels generate about 93.2 kilowatts. Energy is stored in the largest lithium ion battery yet built to power the boat at night and for up to 3 sunless days. It took a route as close to 30 latitudinal degrees of the equator to maximize solar exposure. The boat was built in Kiel, Germany and sailed from Monaco on September 27, 2010. The name Turanor was taken from J.R.R.Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and means, "power of the sun." Captain's log places the Turanor PlanetSolar on 3/11/2011 at Fatu Hiva, the most southerly of the Marquesas Islands after having waited out the possibility if the sea turmoil of tsunamis. Throughout its route, the Turanor crew made educational presentations in ports such as Miami, Florida and Cancun, Mexico to educate people that not only is solar power technology efficient and reliable but that it is here, now. The Turanor’s mission is to send a green message that long-distance transportation can be bolstered by solar power. The PlantSolar team is aiming to show the world that commercial shipping could be accomplished without the use of fossil fuels. Project founder Raphael Domjan said upon arrival to the Marquesas Islands, "We are proud to exceed the limits of solar mobility. This is a big success for the whole team of PlanetSolar and for our partners who for many years have given their know-how to this wonderful project. We are very glad to demonstrate that we really have the technology to change." The Turanor is a catamaran-style vessel with a flat top that features several solar panels. It is constructed of lightweight carbon fiber and powered by four electric motors. The vessel is capable of carrying a charge and moving for three days without sunshine in case of storms or cloud cover. The name, “Turanor,” is derived from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” and means “power of the sun.” The yacht is owned by Swedish entrepreneur Immo Stroher, who plans to hold seminars following the ships journey around the world, stating, "I want to demonstrate that it is possible to achieve commercially realistic earnings over the long term with advanced technologies."
