USS Harry S. Truman is the last Nimitz-class carrier of United States. The next carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), is in construction. First deployment of USS Truman is planned on summer 2000. History will be made Saturday, July 25th, 1998 at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia when the United States Navy commissions the Navy's newest aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The carrier is named in honor of Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), thirty- third President of the United States. Among President Truman's notable accomplishments were ending World War II, providing economic aid and assistance to devastated postwar European countries through the Marshall Plan; promising American support of free nations against direct and indirect Communist aggression under the Truman Doctrine; and establing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Harry S. Truman is the eighth of nine Nimitz Class carriers currently authorized by Congress to be built. Aircraft carriers are deployed worldwide in support of U.S. interest and commitments. They can respond to global crisis in ways ranging from peacetime presence to full-scale war. USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) Wallpaper 3. Wallpaper gallery of USS Harry S. The carrier has a crew of more than 160 officers and 3,200 sailors. The ship is 1,096 feet in length, has a waterline beam of 134 feet, a flight deck width of 252 feet, and displaces approximately 95,000 tons when fully loaded. Two nuclear reactors and four steam turbines engines power the ship to speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship's armament includes four NATO Sea Sparrow missile launchers and four 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems mounts. An airwing of approximately 2,500 personnel will support the 80 aircraft onboard. USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) will be homeported at Norfolk, Virginia. Completing a successful round of sea trials February 26, 2002, following its first shipyard six-month maintenance period, USS Harry S Truman ended the most successful shipyard availability ever held at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The three-year-old carrier left the shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. ahead of schedule and under budget. The maintenance period, known as a Planned Incremental Availability, was the first of many the three year-old carrier will see during her planned 50 years of service. The PIA was performed at a cost of $110 million and saw the installation of a ninth air conditioning plant. Another major accomplishment was the alteration to each of HST's catapults. Ships and aircraft of the USS Harry S Truman Carrier Battle Group commenced use of the Vieques Island inner range in conjunction with their Composite Unit Training Exercise in early September 2002. COMPTUEX was completed by Sept. 25th. After COMPTUEX, HST anchored off the coast of Key West, Fla., for it's off-again/on-again scheduled port visit. USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) Wallpaper 3.
